    Why Make this Recipe

    1. Saves Oven Space: Green Bean Casserole is a common dish served on Thanksgiving, but cooking during the holidays can be stressful! Making your Green Bean Casserole in the Instant Pot saves some oven space, giving you more room to cook other dishes in the oven. (A great stove-space saver is this recipe for Instant Pot Brussels Sprouts!)
    2. 15 Minute Cook Time: Many recipes for Green Bean Casserole in the oven call for 30-40 minute cook times! Shave off some time by using this Instant Pot version.
    3. Simple: Simply dump the ingredients, cook, then thicken the sauce. This recipe is simple to throw together and, once complete, will greet you with that delightful taste of home.

What Do I Need to Make this Recipe

    Ingredients

Here is a visual overview of the ingredients in the recipe. Scroll down to the recipe at the bottom for quantities.

    Labeled ingredient shot
    1. Green Beans: I use fresh green beans. Washed, with the ends removed
    2. Onion Powder Soup Mix: Do not assemble according to package instructions, just use the dry powder. I like the Lipton Recipe Secrets brand, but you can use anything you’d like.
    3. Fried Onions: In my grocery store these can be found near the canned green beans. These are pre-packaged French Fried Onions.
    4. Parmesan Cheese: I will always advocate for fresh grated parmesan cheese. The higher the quality of the cheese, the better the taste.

    Tools

    1. Instant Pot: This will work in any pressure cooker, regardless of the brand.
    2. Small Bowl
    3. Small Whisk: Can also use a fork

    Substitutes for Fried Onions

If you don’t want fried onions on top of your Instant Pot Green Bean Casserole, you have a few more options:

    • Funyons
    • Potato Chips
    • Crackers
    • Breadcrumbs
    • More parmesan
    • Nothing

    How to Make this Recipe

[adthrive-in-post-video-player video-id=”xRM0i4UR” upload-date=”2021-10-29T20:11:00.000Z” name=”Green Bean Casserole” description=”Make your Thanksgiving easier by making your Green Bean Casserole in the Instant Pot! Step 1: Cook the Green Beans

Add the chicken broth, cream of mushroom soup, and onion dip powder into the bottom of your Instant Pot. Whisk everything together until combined. Add the green beans into the pot.

Put the lid on the Instant pot and pressure Cook on HIGH for 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, perform a Quick Release.

    Step 2: Thicken the Sauce

    Sauce in an instant pot

When the pressure is released, combine the water and flour in a small bowl and whisk until all the lumps are gone.

Turn the pot to SAUTE and add the flour and water mixture. Cook, stirring, until the sauce has thickened in the pot.

    Step 3: Garnish and Serve

Add the green bean casserole to a serving dish (I used tongs to transfer the casserole into the serving dish and then put some of the extra sauce in a gravy boat).

Sprinkle the casserole with parmesan cheese and fried onions. Serve and enjoy!

    Expert Tips

Close up of instant pot green bean casserole
    • You will have more sauce in this recipe than you do when cooking your Green Bean Casserole in the oven. You can add all of the sauce to the serving dish if you prefer. Alternatively, you can add any extra sauce to a gravy boat for another tasty gravy on the table.
    • To make this recipe vegetarian, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
    • This would be great with bacon in it! Cook some bacon and add it into the pot after the green beans cook for some extra flavor.
    • If you don’t like French Onion flavoring mix, you can omit it.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use Pre-Cooked Green Beans?

Yes, you can use pre-cooked green beans, either frozen or canned. However, if you do this, I would recommend reducing the initial cook time to 2-3 minutes instead of 10.

Can You Freeze Green Bean Casserole?

Yes you can freeze green bean casserole if you make it ahead of time! I would recommend freezing it without the crispy onion topping on top.

    How to Store Leftovers

You can store leftovers in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge! They will stay good for 5-6 days in the fridge.
