Ceviche is a quick and hands off seafood dish to make at home. And it pairs well with so many different side dishes! Compiled here is a list of the 19 best side dishes for inspiration on what to serve with ceviche for dinner.

A split in half coconut filled with fish ceviche.

Ceviche is a popular main dish across the world, including Latin America (Central America and South America), Oceania, and even North America now! This quick and easy dinner is made by using citric acid to “cook” fish. Note,  it’s not really cooking because heat isn’t used.

Ceviche is a perfect main course for warm summer nights when you don’t want to fire up the oven and for those days where you can’t be bothered with a fancy or complicated meal. It’s about as easy as they come.

Every good ceviche meal comes with some great sides! Whether you want vegetables, salads, soups, or fried sides, we have a list below! Keep reading for 19 delicious recipe ideas on what to serve with ceviche for dinner.

    FAQs about Ceviche

    What is Ceviche?

Ceviche is a method of cooking fresh fish without using any heat. Instead of baking, frying or grilling the fish, it is cooked with citrus juice.

The fish can be cut into either large or small pieces (depending on what country you are taking inspiration from). Then, lemon juice, lime juice, or even orange juice is poured over the fish. Over time, the citrus will cure the fish, making it safe to eat. This is different from enjoying sushi-grade fish, that you find served in sushi rolls. If that’s your jam, here’s 16 different sushi combinations to give a try!

What is the Best Fish for Ceviche?

White fish is the most common choice when making ceviche. This includes options like mahi mahi, cod, sea bass, grouper, or rockfish.

It is always recommended to choose the freshest option and to make sure it is sushi grade. Saltwater fish is a safer option than freshwater fish because it is less likely to have parasites.

Can I Make Ceviche Using Frozen Fish?

Yes as long as you make sure that it is sashimi-grade fish! In this case, make sure to thaw the fish completely before adding the citrus juice to cook it.

The best way to thaw frozen fish is to leave it in the refrigerator overnight before you plan to cook with it.

    Types of Ceviche & Recipes

There are many types of ceviche aside from those recipes made with fresh fish. You can make ceviche out of almost any raw seafood! Here are some other ceviche options:

    • Ceviche Mixto: Ceviche made from many different types of fish/seafood
    • Ceviche de Pulpo: Octopus Ceviche
    • Shrimp Ceviche (Check out this shrimp ceviche recipe!)
    • Lobster Ceviche
    • Even Testicle Ceviche!

    Mix Ins for Ceviche

Ceviche is typically served with vegetables mixed right into the bowl for some variance in texture and flavor. There are so many good things that you can stir into your ceviche including:

    • Chili peppers
    • Red onion
    • Cucumber salad
    • Fresh cilantro
    • Mango
    • Cucumbers
    • Tomatoes

    Ceviche Recipe Tips

    • When choosing fish for ceviche, make sure that you are choosing sushi-grade (sashimi-grade) fish. Because no heat is used to kill any potential bacteria in the fish, you want to make sure that your fish is safe to eat. The best choice (and only choice) is sashimi-grade fish.
    • You can serve your ceviche inside of a coconut shell for a fun presentation (like I did in this recipe)!
    • If you do not like a strong citrus taste, you can rinse the excess citrus juice from the ceviche after it has finished cooking.
    • Feel free to mix your ceviche with the vegetables or salads you are serving it with, or to simply serve them side by side.
    • Some cultures call for cooking their ceviche for hours, while others recommend waiting just 5 minutes. You can choose what works best for you!

    What to Eat with Ceviche

    • Rice: White rice, Brown Rice, Cilantro Lime Rice
    • Quinoa
    • Beans
    • Tortilla Chips or Potato Chips
    • Tostadas (Crunchy tortillas to lay the ceviche on top of)
    • Pico de Gallo: Standard tomato or other fruit varieties
    • Lettuce Leaves
    • Vegetables: Sweet Potatoes, Corn on the Cob
    • Soup
    • Guacamole
    • Tacos
    • Yuca Fries
    • Rice cakes
    • Non-Alcoholic Drinks: Agua Fresca
