For a unique, green twist on a classic brownie, try making these Matcha Brownies with white chocolate chips! Both the flavor and the look are absolutely divine.

Square cut matcha brownies stacked together with white chocolate chips laying around it.

Matcha is such a fun flavor to play around with, and lately I’ve been wanting to try it in everything! The gorgeous green color truly makes a recipe appealing on the eyes, especially if it’s a baked good!

I decided to try my hand at matcha brownies and at first was a little nervous about how they’d turn out. Luckily these matcha brownies were perfect on my first try! So perfect that I’ve made them a few more times since then.

They are wonderfully sweet and the best part is that the matcha flavor is present but not overpowering! It is the perfect blend of the earthy flavor that matcha gives with all the sweetness of regular brownies! You’ll love this recipe!

    Recipe Origins

I don’t bake a ton on this blog, mostly because I have such a fun time experiencing the national dishes of each country! But every once in a while, I try my hand at baked goods…. I’ve had fun making Hot Buttered Rum Cookies, Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake, and even Oreo Egg Rolls!

But mostly, I love making brownies. I’ve made a few versions of brownies on my website including my Fudgy Brownie Recipe, S’mores Brownies, and cute little decorated Mummy Halloween Brownies.

This recipe for Matcha brownies could easily be called matcha blondies because it is actually more similar to a blondie recipe. It is made with white chocolate chips and matcha powder in lieu of chocolate chips and cocoa powder. It doesn’t use any brown sugar like my usual brownie recipes!

I decided to adapt this recipe from The Stay at Home Chef’s chocolate brownie recipe. The base is similar, but the end result is entirely different because of just a few simple swaps!

    Why Make this Recipe

    1. Something New: I love experimenting with new ways to make old classics. While the brownie is a tried and true concoction, it feels like a brand new dessert with the addition of matcha powder!
    2. Simple to Make: Making the brownie batter is very easy. It comes together in 10 minutes, and everything can be mixed by hand.
    3. Great for Matcha Lovers: If you love matcha, this is the perfect dessert for you to try!

    What Is Matcha?

Matcha is a Japanese green tea powder. It is made by grinding up specially processed green tea leaves that are usually grown in East Asia. It is usually described as having a very strong/concentrated green tea flavor.

Critics of matcha will say that it tastes like grass, but matcha fanatics love the earthy flavor and health benefits that the powder provides.

Matcha comes in two different varieties. Ceremonial grade matcha is made of young leaves, so it is very bright green. Culinary grade matcha is made of older leaves, so the color is more subtle. I suggest ceremonial matcha for these green tea brownies but either will work!

What Do I Need to Make this Recipe?

    Ingredients

Ingredients shown to prepare matcha brownies.

Here is a visual overview of the ingredients in the recipe. Scroll down to the recipe at the bottom for quantities.

    1. Butter: I like to use unsalted butter. Melt it completely, and then let it cool slightly before beginning.
    2. Sugar: Use white sugar, also known as granulated sugar
    3. Flour: Use all purpose flour. I have not tried this recipe using any other types of flours.
    4. White Chocolate Chips: The measurement of white chocolate chips should be divided. Some will be microwaved and added to the batter. The rest will be added in chips at the end of the recipe.
    5. Matcha Powder: You can usually buy this at organic or health food stores. If you can’t find it in a store, you can also buy it online. Make sure to get a good quality matcha powder.

    Tools

    1. Baking Pan: I recommend a 9×9 glass pan. You can also use a 9×13 pan but your brownies will be very thin. In that case, reduce the baking time to account for a larger pan. For easiest clean up, you can line your baking pan with parchment paper.
    2. Whisk: Everything can be mixed by hand in this recipe. There is no need for an electric hand mixer or a stand mixer.
    3. Mixing Bowl: You will need a large mixing bowl for the batter and a smaller mixing bowl to melt the white chocolate chips.

    How to Make this Recipe

    Step 1: Prepare

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 9×9 glass pan with nonstick spray and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Batter (Wet Ingredients)

Butter and sugar combined with eggs and vanilla.
White chocolate chips melted into a bowl.

In a medium bowl add the butter and granulated sugar. Whisk by hand for about 30 seconds or until the mixture gets smooth.

Add the eggs and vanilla extract and whisk again for 1 minute.

In a microwave safe bowl, add ½ cup of white chocolate chips. Microwave in increments of 30 seconds, mixing between each set, until the chocolate is melted.

Add the melted white chocolate chips into the mixing bowl and whisk to combine.

Step 3: Make the Batter (Dry Ingredients)

Matcha and other dry ingredients added to the bowl of wet ingredients.
White chocolate chips added to the matcha brownie batter.

Add flour, matcha powder, and salt, and use a rubber spatula to mix again until fully combined

Add in 1 cup of white chocolate chips and mix until they are evenly dispersed.

    Step 4: Bake

Batter for matcha brownies added to an 8x8 greased pan.
Baked matcha brownies cooling in the pan.

Pour the matcha batter into the prepared pan.

Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the brownies comes out clean. Let cool completely before slicing into brownies. Enjoy!

    How to Prepare the Pan

You can prepare the pan in a few ways. I simply spray the pan with nonstick spray and add the batter in. If you don’t have nonstick spray, you can also line the pan with parchment paper or even line it with coconut oil instead.

How to Know When Your Brownies are Ready

3 square cut matcha brownies on top of one another.

You know your brownies are done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Once the brownies have finished baking, remove them from the oven and set the pan on a cooling rack.

The pan will continue to cool and will also continue to bake the brownies a bit more. Wait until the brownies are completely cooled before slicing them into squares. Use a sharp knife to get clean edges!

Although you do not cover your brownies with foil in this recipe, read more about Can You Put Foil in the Oven to know when is appropriate.

    Expert Tips

    • To really amp up the flavor of these brownies, try using browned butter.
    • Using room temperature eggs means that they will blend more easily into the batter and will also help the brownies rise better!
    • Add green food coloring for a more vibrant green color.
    • You can melt the chocolate using a double boiler method if you prefer, but I find that microwaving the chocolate chips is easier and faster, with less clean up!
    • Sift your dry ingredients for ultimately smooth matcha brownies!

    Recipe FAQs

    How Long Do Leftovers Last?

You can store leftovers in an airtight container for about 5 days. No need to refrigerate, you can keep them on our countertop!

    Serving Suggestions

This sweet treat is delicious when eaten at room temperature, but to really amp up the flavor, serve the brownies warm with green tea ice cream!

    Can I Change the Toppings?

Yes! I like the sweetness and subtle flavor that the white chocolate provides, but if you want a different flavor profile, feel free to add in other choices! You can use semi-sweet chocolate or dark chocolate. You can also mix in different things like nuts, coconut or even dried strawberries!
