    Recipe Origins

A few months ago, while living in Italy, I ate, quite literally, the best pizza I’d ever had in my entire life. It was a margherita pizza from the very home of pizza itself… Naples.

When I got home from Italy, I set out on a mission to remake that absolutely incredible pizza. Which led me to this Homemade Margherita Pizza Recipe.

While recipe testing for this recipe, I knew that the key to an ah-may-zing homemade pizza would never call for jarred pizza sauce. So I made that myself too! And this is that recipe.

    Why Make this Recipe

    1. Better than Jarred: Have you ever felt like the jarred pizza sauce you get from the store just tastes SO different than the pizza sauce that you get when you order out? Would you believe me if I told you that this recipe is better than both of those options?
    2. So Simple: It is SO easy to make Pizza Sauce from Scratch! Simply combine the ingredients for this Easy Pasta Sauce in a small bowl and whisk to combine.

What Ingredients are in this Recipe

    Labeled ingredient shot
    1. Tomato Paste: I mix canned tomato paste with water and olive oil to make a more oil-based pizza sauce.
    2. Rosemary: This recipe would be absolutely delicious with fresh rosemary, though dried rosemary works just as well.
    3. Sage: I use rubbed sage, however you can use whatever form of sage you have on hand (even fresh)
    4. Marjoram: Marjoram and oregano are vaguely similar to one another in flavor, though its profile is a bit milder.

    How to Make this Recipe

Simply combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl. Assemble with the pizza as necessary.

    Expert Tips

    • If you don’t have tomato paste, you can use canned tomato sauce in a pinch.
    • Feel free to use fresh herbs if you have them on hand/can find them! Chop them up very finely to stir them into the sauce. Here’s some Substitutes for Italian Herbs if you need suggestions.

    Recipe FAQs

This recipe is so much better than the jarred version and can be made with ingredients you probably already have in your house!”]

What’s the Difference Between Pizza Sauce and Pasta Sauce?

Homemade Pasta Sauce and this Easy Pasta Sauce are made using very similar ingredients! And they actually can be used almost interchangeably.

The main difference between the two is that pasta sauce is made with cooked tomato sauce, while pizza sauce is made with uncooked tomato sauce.

What Else Can I Do With Pizza Sauce?

As aforementioned, pizza sauce and pasta sauce aren’t much different from one another. If you have extra pizza sauce you need to use up, you can mix it with some extra pasta and have a delicious dinner!

If you really want to take your pasta to the next level, try making this Instant Pot Pizza Pasta.

    Can Pizza Sauce be Frozen?

Absolutely! If you want to freeze your pizza sauce, store it in an airtight container and place in the freezer. It should last in the freezer for up to a year.

To thaw, move the pizza sauce to the fridge a few days before you need it. You can also take the pizza sauce out of the freezer the day of use and thaw in cold water.

How Long Will this Pizza Sauce Last?

Make sure to keep the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge. If you do this, the sauce should last for about 7 days after opening.
