Mashed Potatoes are a known classic, but making Mashed Potatoes in the Instant Pot is a new way to make this favorite side dish! The potatoes will be ready for mashing in just about 6 minutes, making this old favorite so much easier to make and enjoy!

Mashed Potatoes are, without a doubt, my number one favorite food. They’re so versatile and can be enjoyed in so many different ways!

My least favorite thing about making mashed potatoes, though, is how long they take to cook. You, unfortunately, can’t just make mashed potatoes on a last-minute decision for dinner. Instead, you must plan ahead of time, boiling potatoes for 30-60 minutes before dinner is served.

These Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes solve this dilemma easily. The potatoes cook in the Instant Pot for 6 minutes and then you’re ready to eat dinner!

How Far in Advance Can I Make Mashed Potatoes?

You can make mashed potatoes even a few days in advance if you’d like to have things ready ahead of time.

Of course, they are always best enjoyed fresh, but if you need to prep the mashed potatoes a few days in advance, you are more than welcome to! Especially if you plan to try my version of Plokkfiskur with boiled cod and mashed potatoes.

During the Christmas season, my parents even make 3 servings of potatoes (for all three Christmas parties we attend) and put them in the freezer. We simply thaw them and then heat them up in the oven before enjoying.

If you are going to make the mashed potatoes ahead of time, you can store them in the fridge for three days. Any longer of a time period, and I would recommend keeping them in the freezer instead.

What is the Best Tool for Mashed Potatoes?

The best tool for mashed potatoes in my opinion is a simple Potato Masher. A lot of times people like to use an electric mixer or a blender to mix up their mashed potatoes, but this method isn’t my personal favorite.

Using an electric mixer will activate the starches in the potatoes and release far too much of it into your dish. This will result in gluey mashed potatoes that are stretchy and too heavy. Using the electric mixer will not create light and fluffy potatoes like using a simple hand masher will.

What Ingredients Do I Need to Make Mashed Potatoes in the Instant Pot

How to Make Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes

    Instant Pot Cooking Instructions

Wash and peel the potatoes. Cut the potato into eighths, making equal sized pieces.

Add 2 cups of water into the Instant Pot and add your potatoes. Put the lid on the Instant Pot, then set to MANUAL or HIGH for 6 minutes. Once the cooking cycle is complete, perform a Quick Release. Drain any remaining water, then follow the assembly instructions.

    Assembly Instructions

Add melted butter and milk and mash with a potato masher until smooth and creamy, adding more milk if necessary.

Add the rest of the ingredients into the potatoes, and use a spoon to mix until well combined.

Can You Keep Mashed Potatoes Warm in the Instant Pot?

Keeping your mashed potatoes warm in the Instant Pot is easy! If you simply keep the mashed potatoes on Keep Warm on Low, you can have beautifully warmed mashed potatoes for up to four hours.

Make sure that your Keep Warm is set to low, or you will end up with burned mashed potatoes on the bottom.
