Mulled Wine in the Instant Pot

This recipe for Mulled Wine is guaranteed to keep you warm and cozy during those fall and winter months. You can make this recipe in the Instant Pot for a hands-off, 3 minute drink that will impress your guests and taste delicious while bundled up for the evening.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 tbsp cardamom pods still in shells
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ cup slivered almonds
  • 1 orange sliced
  • ¼ cup raisins/craisins
  • 1 tbsp cloves
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup Port
  • ½ cup Brandy

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients except port and brandy into the Instant Pot and mix to combine.
  • Put the lid on the Instant Pot and set the pressure to HIGH or MANUAL for 3 minutes. When the timer is done, release the pressure.
  • Add the brandy and port to the wine and allow to sit for 2-3 minutes. Garnish with orange slices and cinnamon sticks and enjoy!

  1. Red Wine: This recipe for mulled wine adds quite a few flavors to your bottle of red, so you’ll want to use a bottle that will hold its flavor well! I chose a red that came from a vineyard in California, but you can choose whatever you’d like. A Malbec is a great option. 
  2. Cardamom Pods: You can buy cardamom pods from the bulk section of your speciality grocery store, or you can even find them sometimes in the prepackaged spices. When adding cardamom to this recipe, I always use pods instead of ground cardamom in order to keep the texture drinkable. If necessary, you can also buy cardamom pods online.  
  3. Cinnamon Sticks: Very similar to cardamom pods, you can find cinnamon sticks in the bulk section of a specialty grocery store (I shop Whole Foods for bulk spices). Make sure to use full cinnamon sticks instead of powdered cinnamon for this recipe, as powdered cinnamon may make this recipe unenjoyable to drink. You can buy cinnamon sticks online, though I normally think it’s cheaper to buy the bottled version in the spices section of your grocery store. 
  4. Port: Port is a Portuguese fortified wine. It is a sweet red wine that is frequently served as a dessert wine. I found this at my local liquor store. If push comes to shove, you can eliminate this ingredient from the recipe, though I do enjoy the extra pop of flavor that it provides. For a cost-conscious option, most liquor stores will provide a “cooking” version of port that is normally ½ to ⅓ of the normal port price. Make sure that the cooking version of port does not have salt added, and it will work as a fine substitute. 
  5. Brandy: Brandy is a liquor produced by distilling wine and is normally served as a digestif. I found my brandy at my local liquor store. 
  6. When releasing the pressure on the Instant Pot, place a dish towel (that you don’t mind staining) over the pressure valve. Because the contents of the Instant Pot are entirely liquid, they may squirt out the top of the valve. The dish towel will protect from any burns or wall stains. 
  7. Customize this recipe to add or subtract any ingredients you desire. If you like lemon instead of orange, make the switch! If you want to add another spice, by all means. 
  8. You may want to strain the Mulled Wine before serving, as there are many small spices in the drink. To do so, pour through a small sieve.
